A strategy is a tool to help you apply your skills. For each skill you apply, you might choose a different strategy. The examples in this unit will show which strategies work best with different types of problems. Here are some common strategies you can use to solve math problems:
Write an Expression or Equation
Some problems can be translated into an expression or equation. You can use a letter or symbol to represent an unknown number.
Example:
Q David hiked 32 miles on Wednesday and Thursday. He hiked 14 miles on Wednesday. How many miles did he hike on Thursday?

32 – 14 = 18
